Betty Lucille Sausnock, (nee Isner) was born August 14th, 1926 in Elkins, West Virginia. She was the daughter of Clay and Mabel Isner,(formerly Shoemaker). She was one of eleven children, while having three sisters and seven brothers. They were: Rita, Mary, Dorothy, Clifford, Marvin, James, Richard, William, Irvin and Russell. She was pre-deceased by all of her siblings.
Betty was a graduate of Elkins High School and eventually would pursue a Nursing career while training at Maryland General Hospital. After her graduation in 1947, she eventually became an R.N. at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She would remain in nursing for over the next thirty years. Betty was not one to brag, but as her son, I can assure you, she was passionate about her role as a nurse and cared about all her patients dearly.
When I was twelve I remember Mom having Frank Robinson as one her patients and she got me his autograph, which I still have. She tended to several Baltimore Colts as well and even rubbed elbows with the famous Dr. Ben Carson.
While training to become a nurse, Betty met a handsome young man named John Sausnock, who was in the U.S. Coast Guard. They met on a blind date at Druid Hill Park, in 1945. John, (better known as HANK) and Betty would marry on November 4th, 1948. Their marriage would last over 63 years. I also remember Mom telling me how she dreamed of being a Surgeon, but she gave up that idea when she married Dad.
Together, Betty and Hank eventually had six children and raised them in their home on Orville Road, in Essex Md. . Among their family, were three boys and three girls, which included twins. Their names were:the late John Charles, Janice Lee, Twins Mary Ann and Stephen James, Betty Jean and Joseph Alan Sausnock. They would also send all six children through Catholic school, with primary years all at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.
Betty and her late husband are also survived by their thirteen loving Grandchildren, Two Great Grandchildren, countless nieces, nephews, cousins and friends
Among the things my Mom liked to do, in no particular order were: planting beautiful flowers, gardening, scrapbooking millions of pictures, sewing, making quilts, collecting bells, spoons and assorted keepsakes from her children, cooking her delicious pot roasts, stuffed cabbage rolls, city chicken and pierogies, (to name a few), watching the old soap operas and game shows, having her private scratch parties, bus trips to the Casinos and spending time with Family, Neighbors and Friends.
Most of all, it''s important that I share, that Betty the Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Aunt, Friend, Neighbor, Sodality Member and NURSE, was an EXTRAORDINARY WOMAN.
I say this because, my Mom's nursing career did not end when she retired from Johns Hopkins. You see, she cared so much about everyone else, whether it was her own family member, a friend from Church, or perhaps even a total stranger. She personified the will to always think of others first, no matter what. Being a NURSE, was part of Betty's fabric.
My Mom was also a devout Catholic who truly loved God. She was as proud of being a Sodality member and parishoner of Our lady of Mt. Carmel as she was of being a nurse and all the other wonderful things she was. For years, she was a fixture at Church and prayed the rosary daily. It bothered her also how that is such a lost art today. Mom's knowledge of the Saints was impeccable and she bailed me out more than once with good ole St. Anthony.
IT'S NO WONDER MY MOM LOVED THE SONG, AMAZING GRACE. SHE WAS TRULY AMAZING HERSELF
May You Rest in Peace Mom,
Your Loving Son Steve
