On April 5, 2015, Easter morning, Edward Andrew Zahner, age 91, went to be with our Lord.

He was born to Edward Robert Zahner and Catherine Emma Dotterweich on April 11, 1923 in Highlandtown, Baltimore, Maryland.  He married Erma Gronberg on December 4, 1959.  They were married for 47 years until her death in 2007.

When he was a young boy the family moved to Essex Maryland.  He was an altar boy at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and a graduate of Kenwood High School.

He served as a Yeoman First Class in the US Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater.  He worked at a supermarket and hotel, but most of his career was in banking at Equitable Trust Bank, which is now Bank of America.  He retired in the 1980s as a vice president.

Edward was a loving and caring man. He loved baseball and golf and once shot a hole-in-one.  He was always known for his sense of humor, story-telling, love of family and willingness to help whenever needed.  In addition to building his own home, he helped three family members build theirs.

Edward is survived by his step daughter-in-law, Nancy Weitzel, step granddaughters Lisa Blevins, Amy Weitzel and Wendy Wimer and her husband Adam, and 4 step great grandchildren.

He is also survived by his sister-in-law Dolores Zahner, and 11 nieces and nephews: Michael Zahner, Patricia Harrison and her husband William, Darlene Schalk, Lawrence Zahner Jr., Keith Zahner and his wife Donna, Glenn Zahner and his wife Kasey, Jeffrey Zahner and Tammy, Michele Franklin, Wayne Zahner, Alison Zahner, and Joseph Zahner and his wife Maureen.

In addition he is survived by many grandnieces and grandnephews, a great grandniece, and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his brothers John, Lawrence, and Joseph, his sister Josephine and his stepson Randall Weitzel.

A private cremation was held. Friends may call at the family owned Bruzdzinski Funeral Home in Essex on Thursday April 9th, 2015 from 3-5 PM & 7-9 PM. A memorial mass will be held at St. Clare Church 714 Myrth Avenue Essex, Maryland on Friday, April 10th at 10 AM. In Lieu of flowers memorials can be made in Edward’s name to the Back River Restoration Committee.
