Emma Grzymski, active in church and community

Emma Grzymski, a former bookkeeper active in her community and church for decades, died October 9 at the Woodlands Assisted Living in Middle River after a lengthy illness.

The long-time Essex resident was 91.

Mrs. Grzymski was born and lived in Essex until moving to the Woodlands in 2007.

A 1937 graduate of Kenwood High School, Mrs. Grzymski began work as a bookkeeper at Anchor Post Products that year, leaving after fifteen years to raise a family.  After her children grew she again did bookkeeping for several local businesses.  “Mom liked to remind people she began when bookkeeping was all done by hand,” said a son, Thomas Grzymski, an executive with the Social Security Administration.

Mr. Grzymski also recalled his mother’s involvement with the Essex Senior Center and Essex Golden Age Club where for a number of years “she organized the bus trips each spring and fall.  Sadly, as the years passed, they went from three busloads, down to one, and then had to stop altogether as members aged.”

A member of St. Clare Parish since it began in 1955, Mrs. Grzymski was also an active volunteer at the church.  “For years Mom was involved in the Ladies Sodality, she was the first woman to serve as the parish council president at St. Clare, and in her later years she enjoyed selling raffle tickets at events so she could visit with everyone during the day,” said another son, Fr. Donald Grzymski, pastor of St. Clement Parish in Rosedale.

She also enjoyed travel, making her last trip to Europe at age 82, and did all types of craft work, as well as baking walnut or pound cakes for special events.  Her husband of 50 years, Syl Grzymski, died in 1992, and she is predeceased by six brothers and sisters.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at St. Clare Church on Thursday.

In addition to her sons Mrs. Grzymski is survived by nieces and nephews.
