Garlin Ray Hobson Sr.

March 16, 1930 - December 11, 2020

Garlin Ray Hobson, Sr., 90 years old passed away peacefully on December 11, 2020 after a 19 month decline in health due to Alzheimer’s.  He was born in Grassy Creek, NC and raised primarily in Spruce Pine, NC.  The oldest of 11 children, he is preceded in death by his late parents, Mitchell and Essie Hopson; his wife of 61 years Betty Jean Hobson (nee Parker), his sister Gertrude Wilson, Elva Turpin, Edgar Hopson, Geneva Lawrence, Donald Hopson, Betty Jo Brydge, and Michael Hopson.
Garlin left school in the 8th grade to go to work with his Daddy on the Blue Ridge Parkway to help provide for their large family.  He worked until he married in October of 1951 and in 1952 when his first child was 6 weeks old he and his wife Betty Jean moved to Maryland with their baby at the urging of his father- in- law Jason A. Parker, Sr. convincing Garlin he could find a good job.
Garlin worked at various jobs initially until settling in with Food Fair starting as a clerk and working his way up through management.  He was a hard dedicated worker and always proud of his beautiful produce department.  After Food Fair changed hands he stayed with a pantry Pride and his final job was at Harvest Fair until his retirement at 65.
Garlin was always an avid fisherman, bowled on leagues for years and loved his game of golf.  In retirement he became a starter at Clifton Park Golf Course for many years.  He loved to garden and always took great pride in his beautiful yard and flowers.  His pride and joy of the yard was his veggie garden every year, particularly his tomato garden of at least 70-80 plants every year.  His tomatoes were amazing!
His favorite pastime of late was watching old westerns and he loved baseball and football and enjoyed watching the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens.
Garlin is survived by his children, Laura Sue Wolfe (Rick Wolfe) of New Bern, NC, Garlin R. Hobson, Jr. (Patricia Hobson) of Abingdon, MD, Melanie G. Head (Mike Head) of Aberdeen, MD and Terri J.
