Hannah Louise Hemmerly (nee Johnson), 95, died on February 2, 2012 at Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Baltimore, MD. Hannah was born March 5, 1916 in Bethlehem, PA to the late Elsie C. (nee Wolf) and Elmer K. Johnson. She grew up in Hecktown, PA and was a 1933 graduate of Nazareth High School. She graduated from St. Luke’s School of Nursing (Bethlehem) in 1937. Her nursing career included emergency room duty, community work, summer camp and private duty nursing.
“Johnnie” married the late Howard Trythall Hemmerly of Bethlehem in 1940. They raised their three children in Chatham and Basking Ridge, NJ. From 1976 to 1996 summers were spent at their log cabin in Indian Lake, NY. After their 1978 move to Lititz, PA, both volunteered with Meals on Wheels and at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lancaster and were active in the Lititz Moravian Congregation. They moved to Essex, MD with their daughter in 2006.
Hannah is survived by her three children: Mary Ellen Eckman and her husband David of Yardley, PA, Marjorie Carl and her husband Eric of Essex, MD and James Hemmerly of Brooklyn, NY; her grandchildren, Laurie D. Burger and Hannah R. Hemmerly; her three step grandsons, Rick, Mark and Tom Carl, 12 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; her sister-in-law Mary Lou Hemmerly; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 1p.m. on Sunday, February 19 at Hope Lutheran Church, 1901 Middleborough Rd., Essex, MD. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Gilchrist Hospice, Hope Lutheran Church, or Lititz Moravian Congregation.
