Madeline Ledford Obituary
On February 2, 2024, Madeline Ingram Ledford passed away peacefully. Beloved wife of the late Vaughn B. Ledford. Loving mother of Kenneth Ledford and his wife Sandy, Clyde Ledford and his late wife Mary Lou Buck, Larry Ledford and his wife Glenda, Barry Ledford and his wife Jody, and Mark Ledford, Sr., and his wife Judy. Madeline was blessed with 17 Grandchildren and their spouses and significant others whom she considered her grandchildren as well: Vaughn C. (Michelle), Rachelle (Dennis), Sean (Lori), Joshua (Melissa), Amy (Damon), Jon, Jordan (Cara), Dave (Jackie), Sierra , Danny (Mary), Mark Jr. (Megan), Morgan (Derek), Meredith (Steven), Iryna (Ram), Olga (Clay), Jaden (Patrick), and Marissa (Ben); 20 Great Grandchildren: Xavier, Sydney, Casey A., Alyssa, Schuyler, Nick, Vaughn A., Tyler, Joey, Hunter, Garrett, Connor, Camden, Casey H., Cooper, Christopher, Daisy, Viya, August, and Atlas; along with many nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-laws, other loving family members, and friends.
Born and raised in Buladean (Mitchell County) North Carolina, Madeline was the beloved daughter of the late Wilson and Venia (Troutman) Ingram, and the sister of six siblings who predeceased her, and their spouses. She graduated from Tipton Hill High School where she played basketball. Shortly after the end of World War II, she married the love of her life, Vaughn, and moved to Maryland. Upon relocating to Maryland, Madeline gave birth to her five sons all of whom were part of the baby boomer generation (her oldest born at the beginning of the generation and her youngest born at the end).
Madeline revealed herself as an independent woman and thinker who was always willing to learn and assume greater challenges. After moving to Maryland, she worked at the former Glenn L. Martin Company (now Lockheed Martin) in Middle River, the former Oriole Chemical Company, and the former Baltimore City Hospital (now Johns Hopkins Bayview) where she served as a staff assistant. In that capacity, Madeline taught herself how to use the beginning vestiges of word processing. Oftentimes, she typed many papers for her husband and sons after work into the wee hours of the morning only to return home and get ready to go back to work later that day. She retired on April 8, 1994.
Madeline was a selfless, kind, and gentle lady who loved her family unconditionally and without compromise. She was the staunchest advocate of her family and, while kind and gentle, she did not suffer fools and would not tolerate anyone speaking ill of her family. She had a deep, abiding Christian faith and was an active member at Middle River Baptist Church serving as a choir member and on various committees until very late in her life. Madeline enjoyed reading, singing, gardening, baking, needle point, crocheting, crafting (particularly with her grandchildren), and traveling. She was also a “closet collector” of many things including pictures, first day covers, coins, toys, and Christmas tree ornaments for her grandchildren.
