Marie A. (Sakowicz) Schap

Marie Sakowicz Schap, long time resident of Bowleys Quarters, passed away at Bel Air Health & Rehabilitation on January 3, 2013. She was 97 years old. She was born in Baltimore, the daughter of the late Antoni and Josephine Rawinisz Sakowicz.

Marie worked for the Glenn L. Martin Company during the Second World War, as a 11Rosie the Riveter", and was the first woman there to donate blood to the American Red Cross for the war effort. She continued there until1962 when she started her second career as a volunteer for her church and community.

She was a volunteer worker at the old City Hospital in Baltimore, also at the Well Baby Clinic in Middle River, and the Eastern Interfaith Outreach in Essex. Marie was an avid quilter, seamstress and rosary maker. Her proudest moment was being kissed on the forehead by Mother Theresa of Calcutta for her contributions to the Missionaries of Charity.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Stanley Schap.

Marie is survived by her three children James Schap and wife Marijo of Baltimore, Kathleen Gowl and husband Richard of Drumore, PA and Victoria Schab and husband Theodore of Havre de Grace. She is also survived by seven granddaughters, ten great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons.

A viewing will be held on Sunday January 6, 2013 from 3-5 pm and 7-9 pm at Bruzdzinski Funeral Home, P.A. 1407 Old Eastern Ave. Baltimore, MD. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church 1706 Old Eastern Ave. Essex, MD at 9 am Monday January 7, 2013 with internment following at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Dundalk.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Education Fund.
