Wellington Sylvester Johnson, born January 17, 1931, departed this life on October 7, 2020. He spent his early years in the town of Kay Moor, WV (now extinct). There, he worked in the Coal Mines, and in his pastime, played baseball and was part of one of the first Negro Baseball Leagues (he could have played in the major leagues). Wellington was also a strong swimmer in his early years. He would swim out into the river to test the depth of the water to make sure it was safe so that the Pastor of the church would be able to baptize. He is a veteran, having served as well as survived with honors in the Korean War. Wellington worked many years in Construction as a Cement Finisher and helped build Harford Heights Elementary School located in North-East Baltimore.
Wellington had a great sense of humor and was a very strong singer. He could sing all genres uplifting the spirits of all those around him. He had a marvelous tenor voice and used his beautiful gift singing in the church. He sang with the famous professional quartet The Ink Spots. His talents even went as far as WOAY Broadcasting Radio Station with the Royal Trumpets in Oakhill, WV. His favorite song was "Shine on Me" which he sang melodiously until his health failed. Wellington was predeceased by his grandparents who raised him, Bertha and Joseph Johnson, his mother Beatrice A. McKnight, brother Marvin Arnold, and sister Bertha Arnold-Smith (Mickey).
Wellington, affectionately called "Welly", was a charmer and was loved dearly by many. He will be missed by his children Yvette Weathers, Yvonne Johnson, and Sharon Cannon, sisters Evelyn A. Hyman and Donna L. McKnight, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends. The family owes a debt of gratitude to the friends and staff at All Together Assistant Living Group Home. Wellington may be gone in body, but he will live forever in spirit and in our hearts. Until we meet again, rest happily and in peace at home with Christ.
